P
IS FOR
POPULATION

BY JOLENE
(fifth grader, 96/97)

There was a lot of people back during when a lot of men worked in the mines. There was a population of about 18,000 people. Now, there is a population of about 9,000 people in Virginia. More immigrant kids went to school to learn the English language.

The town was larger when it had sawmills. But now the sawmill is gone, so Virginia is now smaller than it used to be.

A lot of men used to work in the mines because back then they didn't have any big machines to do the work like they do now.

People always had to live really close to their work because if you lived far away it would take a long time to walk to work. But now people have cars so if people live in, let's say Britt, they could get to work on time.
