Mining (Open Pit)

Once underground, iron ore mining became too expensive, and new machinery was invented open pit mining started in Virginia. This was a big plus for Virginia. Virginia was and still is one of the biggest mining cities in Minnesota. Here are some of +'s and -'s of open pit mining in the olden days.
+'s
Cheaper than underground mining.
Less dangerous than underground mining.
Didn't need a light to work.
-'s
Bad weather affected the work that was being done.
Colder and hotter than underground.
Didn't get to ride on an elevator.
Mining provided jobs to some people during the depression, yet to some it was another job they wished they could have.
Most miners lived in locations (houses near the pit) or boarding houses. Miners would work long, brutal hours for low pay. Some miners did not have families, but for those who did, every cent they made went to the family.
