IMMIGRANTS

BY MEGAN
(FIFHT GRADER, 1996/97)

Immigrants lived in all Virginia neighborhoods. Some immigrants worked in the sawmills, mines, woods, and farms. Some immigrant men lives in boarding houses until they could afford to buy houses. Most men lived in boarding houses until they could send for their families to come to America.

Some immigrants came to America because they heard that Americans were so rich they put silver dollars on the sides of their houses. But when they got here, they found out it was on the heads of nails that held the tar paper on the sides of the houses. They were disappointed, but it turned out o.k. for them in the end as they made a new life here.
