G
is for the
Great Depression

By Samantha
(fifth grader, 1996/97)

During the Great Depression everyone was dirt poor.

If you were a girl you would sometimes have to wear flour sack dresses. They would make them out of flour sacks (uncomfortable). The boys would call them names like Pilsbury and Gold Medal.

They also used to have kid sled dog races. The winner would get a bag of food. A mother would be very happy if a kid brought home a sack of flour or any other food.

There was a road in Virginia called Hoover Road. In the Depression the people who lived there were dirt poor. The would go around knocking on doors for a handout of food. See "H" for more information.

If you were a doctor some people could not afford to pay for the doctor's services, so they would give you an animal like a pig. The doctors would have to take it. No one had much money. If someone paid with a pig today the doctors would laugh and then refuse it.
