Entertainment
By Joey
(fifth grader, 1996/97)
Entertainment was one thing that kept people busy in Virginia. Back then people didn't have TV, so they had to find something better to do. In the old days in Virginia people could go to the Opera House, go see a Vanderville show, go to a play, or listen to a lecture. Back then they needed lots of entertainment because life was hard. Usually I think men would go to saloons. There they would have a drink and maybe they'd have a cigar or two. Maybe they'd talk with other guys or maybe talk with women. Back then I think Main Street was a real rough place to be. With all the saloons men would get drunk and they would get into fights, and maybe even curse each other because they were so drunk. Men who worked in the mines didn't always get along with those that worked at the sawmills. Grownups also went to church, but I don't think the men that went to salons went to church.
