(fifth Grader,1996/97)
Chestnut street had two big fires. After the 2nd fire the whole street was made out of brick. They had logs on the streets. And raised wooden sidewalks. Chestnut Street had only one street light and it was at the intersection. Along the street there was mucky mud. In 1912 they made cement sidewalks instead of wood ones. They loved 4th of July parades. They would play instruments down chestnut street. In 1946 they had a homecoming celebration for the GI's (meaning soldiers). The Fay Hotel burned down in 1943. That was one of the major fires. The Coates Hotel replaced the Fay Hotel. Chestnut street will soon be designed as a historic downtown on the National Historic Regester.
