Boarding Houses
By Joseph
(fifth grader, 1996/97)
There were many boarding houses in Virginia. The boarding houses had at least 4 floors. They had a lot of people sharing a bathroom at a time. Mostly, it was unmarried miners, mill workers and other people lived in there. When they get married or if they had enough money to move out. Sometimes, married immigrants who came a lone to this country would live in a boarding house until they could save enough money to send for their families.
B is also for Baileys lake. Its real name is Virginia's lake but people call it Baileys lake because Baileys sawmill was on it. They used to dump snow on it from the streets of Virginia. Until one day a team of horses fell through the ice and died!
